Yarns Do Matter

My stash seems to be expanding faster than I can knock out projects!!!  Isn't that always the way.  Here are the latest additions.

Webs_dec07_kauni Laura_bday_dec07 Webs_dec07_norosock

First up is some Kauni Effektgarn in an eggplant color way.  This was a yarn I found out about via Ravelry when people begged Webs to put in an order.  After looking at some of the projects on Ravelry, I could see what all the fuss was about.  This is 100% wool multi-color with long color repeats that result in some really special work.  I purchased mine to make Lady Eleanor Stole (pattern from Scarf Style) as a gift for a dear friend who is retiring after 35 years of working for the City.  She's a really special lady so I searched a long time for a special project and yarn.  I think this will fit the bill.  And I am excited to cast-on this weekend as this will also be my first entrelac project.  I love to do new things!

Next up is GGH Coco which was a belated birthday gift from a friend.  And finally a special treat for me, also from Webs, some Noro Kureyon Sock yarn!!!  I now have three special skeins of sock yarn awaiting me.  It might be time cast-on for a pair, especially with the temperatures dipping down to the low 40's here in Southern California.

I did finish a stash busting project last week.

Branching Out
Pattern: Knitty.com - Spring 2005
Yarn: Soho Side by Side (100% Acrylic)
Needle: Size 9
Knit: December 13 - 22, 2007
Notes:  This is a great pattern that makes a very pretty lace.  Of course, you just can't tell that from my project. This pseudo-fiber was a bad selection for the pattern.  This was a totally process project with the side goal of stash busting so I was totally happy with it in that regard.  And the scarf itself is nice and warm and will make a good charity donation.

I have a wonderful 4-day weekend due to the weird Tuesday holiday.  Rather than come in on Monday, I just took it off.  And instead of knocking around the house I actually have some social plans! Still I hope to find time to do quite a bit of knitting as I watch all my Netflix.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Holiday Gifts

Another Christmas bites the dust.  It was good long weekend.  I managed to see three excellent movies - Juno, Sweeney Todd & Charlie Wilson's War - all of which I highly recommend.  Jon and I also had friends over on Christmas Eve and had a good time.  The highlight of the evening was a rollicking game of Scattergories with the answer of the night being "Marla Maples Mammaries" for "Things That Are Round" beginning with "M".

Christmas Day itself was low key.  After sleeping in until noon, Jon and I hung out on the couch watching Season 2 of "The Office", one of my gifts to him.  I got an ipod nano and some comic books as well as some other random gifts including a Hula Girl and a Hannah Montana DVD (a closet obsession).  And a stocking full of beauty sundries from my Mom.  There was a note of the bittersweet as a few tears were shed by both Jon and I as we digested the fact that this was probably our last Christmas together.  Next year I expect we will both have new significant others. Sigh.  Other than that, the transition is going pretty well and I think we are going to be able to remain roommates and best friends.

Well I made more gifts than I thought this season.  Actually, it's because I make things all year round - a side effect of my process knitting mentality.  I knit things with no person in mind and then dig into the basket of FO's when the holidays roll around.

Ballbanddec0107_024Dec_07_015My childhood Pal Kristen got my Charade socks and these ball band dishclothes with some soaps. The socks were actually a last minute addition to the gift.  I actually brought these back east for me to wear for the first time but they were a wee bit tight on the instep.  So I made a spontaneous decision to gift them to her.  She's proved deserving since she brought her cute baby Alexandra over wearing the sweater I knitted.  Adorable!

I also whipped up some Calorimetry's for my Mom and sister.  But had to give them both to Mom since for some reason I have a mental block when it comes to my sister's allergy to wool.  I just used some leftover wool, one a dark gray and the other was kool-aid dyed.  I even wore one while I was there and these are perfect for the New England cold.  No pictures because I forgot to take some but they look exactly like the gazillion every one else has done.

I also made a green hat for my nephew in less than a day with the yarn we purchased in Boston.  It was too big since he wasn't around that day for me to measure off his head so he might not wear it until next year.  And the Cabled Band Hat that I will give my girlfriend this weekend. Dalek_xmas07_2 My favorite gift of the season that I made was the Dalek for Jon.  Now if you are not a Doctor Who fan you may not be familiar with this evil alien species bent on destroying the universe.  And you are really missing out.  The current incarnation of the show is awesome (available on BBC) and both Jon and I are big fans.  So when I saw this while kicking it around the net, I knew I had to make it for him!  I didn't even have to buy anything, this was all stash yarn and some polyfill I already had.  The pattern I used was great.  The only surprise was how big he turned out - over 12 inches.  Still he's a snuggly as an alien can be and Jon loved him!

Now it's on to my next big gift project for someone very special at work that is retiring in February.  The yarn arrived yesterday (with some other goodies for me) and I can't wait to cast-on!  I'll share more soon.

Head Coverings are Quick!

I had an initially decided to make 2 hats for gifts for girlfriends.  I ended up with one gift and one for me!  This first one is the gift andI really like how classy this looks so I might make one for myself.

Bandedcabledhat_dec_07_057

Banded Cabled Hat
Pattern: Cabled from Baby Cocktails
Yarn: Colorado Yarns Knitaly (100% Wool)
Needle: Size 5
Knit: December 4 - 13, 2007
Notes:  I made few modifications to this pattern. I wanted it to be tighter fitting so I only cast on 110 sts.  Plus I did a provisional cast-on so the band was seamless.  I switched to gray yarn for a contrast for the first two turn rows and for the i-cord bands. The cable is also different being a serpentine type with three in one direction and the other three in another.  I also made significant changes to the crown decreases since I like a much smoother transition than how the pattern was written. So I started my decreases in the back on the last cable repeat. And did them every other row until almost the end.  The little buttons just came from the button jar.

The other one hat was supposed to be a trial run for a gift knit in a different color.  Mainly because this remnant yarn (about 1/2 skein) was ready to go versus the yarn I was going to use for the gift needed to be wound.  Kinda a no brainer when deciding on your projects about 20 minutes before you leave for the airport! And although I love the hat and the pattern and probably will make it again, I found a cute T that was even more perfect for my pal so I nixed the gift idea.

Foliage
Pattern: From Knitty Fall 2007
Yarn: Gjestal Naturgarn No. 1 (100% Bulky Wool)
Needle: Size 10.5
Knit: December 11 - 12, 2007
Notes:  The only modification was an half an extra pattern repeat which I didn't really need since now I turn up the ribbed band.  Super cute hat but the wool can get a wee bit itchy on the forehead.

Honestly, hats are so quick and fulfilling why don't I make them more often???  Not only are they a great way to stash bust those lonesome skeins, they are the perfect charity knitting. Expect to see more of these in my future!

Not So Sunny California

A picture from my office of downtown LA today.   Notice you can't actually see the skyscrapers.  That's actual weather!!!

Pajama Hound

My nephew is a pajama hound.  He loves nothing better than lounging in his PJ's all day.  So when I visited last week and we did our gift exchange, it was no surprise that the Batman and Superman pajamas I got from Target were a big hit.   He immediately went and put the Superman pair on.  And a few hours later he was wearing a piece of each.  And he ended the day in Batman!

It's cold and rainy here in Southern California and I want to be home in my PJ's too!!!

Dyeing Adventure

Per my usual modus operandi, while visiting my Mom I used her washing machine for crafty projects.  Usually it's to felt but for whatever reason, I haven't done any feltable projects this year.  What I did want to do this year was dye.  You see I have this great white dress that I have worn a few times.  The only thing is that I get so many Marilyn comments when I wear it (halter neck, big puffy skirt).  So much so that last year, I actual did that as my Halloween costume!  Anyway, I have been thinking for a while that if I changed the color, I would get more wear.

I purchased my supplies and flew them with me to MA.  I was going for a red-orange color.  After 30 minutes and mild wash later I had my change.  It was not as dramatic as I could have wished.  There were no tags but the fabric must have some synthetic as the color didn't take as well as it did on the lining (which was the exact color I was going for) but a least it is no longer white!

Tales from New England

**Warning.  No Friday Review today (on hiatus until after the New Year) and there is not much knitting in this post.  If you are just here for that, move on.**

OK.  I am usually the person who goes in no matter how sick I am.  I can always manage to be somewhat productive and for whatever reason, when I take a sick day I like it to be a mental health day.  So Wednesday when I came in sick and got progressively worse (chills & mild fever), I persevered due to a late afternoon meeting that I was not going to reschedule.  It was until the trek home that I felt like I was going to drop.

Traffic was crazy downtown so I trekked the 6 blocks to the subway to catch the bus further down the route.  And then proceeded to wait 45 minutes for the bus which got caught up in the craziness downtown.  It took me 1-1/2 hours to get home and I was ready to drop.  So Thursday I stayed home. Sometimes a day at home on the couch is just necessary!  And today I feel almost 100%.  Yeah!

So back to my trip East.  It was a good time and I love spending time with my family.  Especially my 6-year old nephew who is a bit of a neurotic.  I always try to do something special with him when I visit.  This time it was a trip in to Boston with my Mom and a showing of The Nutcracker.  My sister even let him skip school for it!

The train in is always fun.  Though it was a bit long.  Apparently some shocks were shot on one of the cars so they couldn't go fast almost doubling the normal 50-minute ride.  Not unbearable but there were a few "Are we there yet?" towards the end.  I had decided early on that I wanted to head to Harvard Square for lunch.  I like to walk through the school and just like the area.  And there is a very convenient yarn store!  So off on to the T we went, marveling at the hellacious increase in price.  My mom insists that the last time we were in town the fare was still under a buck, not the $2 it is now.  Still one of the best transit systems around.

Once we cross the river into Cambridge, the first stop was Woolcott for my souvenir trip yarn.  And to educate my Mom a bit on why I only like "nice" yarn now.  I chose a skein of Classic Elite Alpaca Sox.  And my nephew, who had informed me he wanted a hat, chose some teal wool.  As a quick ahead, I made the hat the next day which turned out a wee bit big as I was winging it.  He was bored with the idea by then anyway.  It will probably never grace his head.

Next it was off too lunch.  After sitting down at this lovely tavern, we had to get up and leave as they didn't have a single thing the kid would eat.  He is an extremely picky eater and pretty much lives on chicken nuggets, hot dogs and fruit.  No sauce on anything either.  So we wandered a bit before sitting down at the Border Grill, a weird Cajun/Mexican place, that had the needed nuggets.  Food was good and the margaritas were strong so we were happy.

Dec_07_008As we left the restaurant, it started too snow.  Normally I detest the white stuff but it was rather pretty this time.  And it made a beautiful back drop for our visit to Boston Commons.  My picture skills were sucky this trip but since the nephew generally refuses to be photographed, it didn't really matter.  As we walked, the kid picked up every chunk of packed snow and proceeded to smash it into small pieces.  How easily entertained are the young.  We walked over to the ice rink but skating is not my forte and I didn't want to have a sore butt.  Plus the kid gets super easily embarrassed in public.

Dec_07_010Instead we walked over to Macy's to shop for a bit before heading to the show.  This shot of the snow falling down in the night is my favorite.  At the store, I went a bit loco and bought my nephew a $50 purse to give to his mother.  I couldn't resist.  It was shaped like a dachshund, just like the wiener dog that seemed to sit in my lap every time I sat down at the house (Padme the dog).  I am not a small dog girl but it grew on me over the 5-days.  Anyway, when I saw the purse it just made me laugh.  And because her son will be the one to give it to her, she will have to carry it around!  That's just how presents work with your kids.

Dec_07_011Then it was off to the Nutcracker.  I do wish we were a bit more dressed up but since we were walking around all day, that wasn't very feasible. The Opera House is a lovely venue and it was great seeing all the cute kids milling about.  And when we got to our "cheap" seats with their impeded view I was stunned.  We were 7 rows back from the stage on the left.   We could see everything except the Christmas tree.  It was amazing!!  I had never seen the show except bits and pieces on PBS so it was a treat.  Caleb loved the first half, especially the rat king dying, but all the dancing in the second half did him in.  He was ready for it to be done.  To be honest, I was too.  Ballet is nice but unless it's telling a bigger story, it wasn't doing much for me after the first 10 minutes.

When it was done, we trekked back to South Station for the train ride home and were all snuggly in our beds by midnight after a great day out.

Still Alive

I'm still here.  Just super busy.  I just got back from seeing my family in MA for the holidays.  6 days in cold, cold New England.  Lots of fun but now I am sick.  And I have too much to do so have to be at work.  So here I sit in the office wearing my knit hat and scarf, my heater blasting away with a cup of hot tea.  My new co-workers haven't seen me in sick mode before so I am having to answer the odd question but this is what gets me through the day when all I want to do is be home in bed.  Blech!

I promise to blog more soon.  I have new yarn to show off, nephew stories to share and some FO's!
